The 2024 International Safeguarding Conference took place at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and for the first time the theme was focused on persons with disabilities.
David has worked in both government and non-government services across Australia. David’s previous role was as the National Leader for L’Arche Australia, where he was responsible for forming rigorous engagement strategies to develop and exceed regulatory compliance standards. His focus is on continuous improvement and finding innovative ways for everyone to live flourishing lives supported within a safe community.
The recent findings from the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation are a critical learning space for all parishes and ministries who are engaged with persons with disabilities. Dr. David Treanor, Director Safeguarding & Compliance, ACSL, provided an overview of these findings to conference participants. In this live learning, David will explore these findings in more detail and discuss what we can learn from them and how we can support people with disabilities in our church to live flourishing lives. David will cover the following topics:
- What is a Royal Commission?
- Why was a Commission established?
- Key findings.
- Implications for parishes and ministries.
- Suggested principles to guide audit approaches.

Australian Catholic Safeguarding Ltd respectfully acknowledges all Traditional Custodians of the land and waters of Australia.
We pay respect to their Elders, past and present, and young leaders of today and the future. ACSL commits itself to the ongoing work of reconciliation with our Aboriginal families and communities.
ACSL acknowledges the lifelong trauma of abuse victims and survivors and their families; the failure of the Catholic Church to protect, believe and respond justly to children and adults at risk; and the consequent breaches of community trust.
